Sanborn Under Way on Impressive D.C. Double
High-Tech Mapping Firm Charts Nation’s Capital for Second Consecutive Year
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo., June 16, 2015 — Aerial data collection by The Sanborn Map Company, Inc. (Sanborn) is proceeding under a major contract that provides a host of mapping services encompassing Washington, D.C., and its surrounding metropolitan area. Sanborn flew a similar mapping mission within the Capital Beltway in 2014, making it the only firm to perform such services over the highly secure geographic area two years in a row.
“This project is a great win for our company, as well as for the government agencies and citizens who will benefit from our high-quality deliverables,” says Jason Caldwell, Sanborn VP of business development and sales. “Negotiating the complex flight restrictions over Washington, D.C., requires a great deal of expertise, and we’ve earned the government’s trust for this project. Additionally, our open-source data licensing policy means the data we provide can be shared limitlessly among numerous government agencies and with the public.”
Sanborn will acquire and process a wide range of high-resolution imagery products, including 3-inch resolution orthoimagery, 4-inch resolution oblique imagery and light detection and ranging (Lidar) data that meet U.S. Geological Survey Level 1 resolution and accuracy requirements, including nominal point spacing of 8 points per square meter and the ability to support the creation of 1-foot contour mapping.
Sanborn is partnered on the venture with A. Morton Thomas & Associates, a Washington, D.C.-based engineering firm, and was selected to perform the project from among a considerable number of competing mapping firms.
