Impervious surfaces are surfaces that prevent precipitation from
infiltrating soil. Man-made objections such as roads, side walks, and buildings
are considered impervious surfaces. With increasing urbanization, impervious surface
area will continue to grow impacting the surrounding area in which it's built.
Impervious mapping allows for the classification of impervious structures
and also permits the tracking of changes to impervious land area. Using various
software, imagery is segmented into groups of spectrally and spatially similar
pixels, creating a layer of image objects which can then be classified based on
various properties. Once image segments are created, an image analyst defines
a rule base to classify the segmented layer. After this step, minor manual editing
is required for quality control and assurance. The end result is an impervious
layer overlaying a spatially accurate orthophotograph. On this layer each impervious
structure is color coded based on class. Classes can range from commercial buildings
and paved roads to deciduous forest and non-woody wetlands. Impervious
classes include:
- Unpaved roads
- Industrial Sites
- Residential
Buildings
- Swimming pools
- Sidewalks
APPLICATIONS
OF IMPERVIOUS MAPPING Impervious mapping applies geo-spatial information
to critical issues:
- Storm Water Management
- Land
Use Planning
- Wildland Fire Risk Assessment
- Emergency Response
- Disaster
Recovery
- Forest Inventory
- Ecosystem Management.
- Tax
Assessment
Impervious mapping can be used for projects as small as
100 square miles to larger than 8000 square miles and can utilize resolutions
as high as 6 inches to as low as 5 meters.
