Sanborn has developed a GEOPORTAL product to facilitate the rapid deployment of web-based GIS solutions to a variety of markets. Based on a proven open-source content management system, it merges the power and flexibility of a portal with the capabilities of the industry standard web-mapping engine–ESRI’s ArcIMS. In addition, Sanborn is developing a vendor neutral component for the GSP that will allow organizations to dynamically discover, query, and report on map content provided by any server product that implements Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) interfaces.
The GEOPORTAL represents a new age of web-based GIS functionality. Never before has so much functionality been so easy to implement. With full control over the site content through the web browser, authorized users (i.e. the GIS department or IT manager) can rapidly address the changing needs of an organization. A full permission and access model has been integrated into the portal to allow for role-based access to sensitive datasets and other portal resources. In addition to the mapping components, the GEOPORTAL comes with 18 other content components—including Frequently Asked Questions, Image Upload, Announcements, Discussion Groups, and Contacts—just to name a few. In addition, there is an active market place for additional components including e-commerce stores, custom report and table generators, and task management. Creation of compelling, geospatial web sites have never been easier!
